Employment & The Age Factor

Why do some employers request age as part of the hiring process? Should not a person be hired based on qualifications alone? I recently stumbled across this when a close person I know requested that I prepare a resume for her.

After having gone through her qualifications and had the resume all ready sans age, the person tells me, "Oh age is important o- they always ask for age?" And I thought myself, "What has age got to do with an application?"

It is one thing to perform ageism or age discrimination which is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups because of their age, you know the situation where employers are subtle about hiring people based on physical appearance by assuming their ages, and it is another to specifically ask people how old they are and to request it as part of the hiring process.

Neither situation is a good outcome but I see it as being very wrong and discriminatory when it is a requirement to have people state their ages on a resume. What companies are notorious for this discriminatory behaviors what are your thoughts on it?
